Quick Links

Weather effects make a return in Tears of the Kingdom, meaning Link's going to need the appropriate armor when exploring Hyrule and the Sky Islands. Familiar fans of Breath of the Wild already know that areas with intense heat or cold will slowly chip away at Link's health if he's not prepared. It would do TotK players well to stock up on weather-resistant gear and food before getting too carried away.

Players should avoid confusing heat-resistant with flameproof in Tears of the Kingdom. Flameproof armor or elixirs won't protect Link from the sun in areas like the Gerudo Wasteland. They'll need armor or food/elixirs that explicitly says 'heat-resistance,' or else they risk taking damage from the hot weather.

Cook Heat-Resistant Meals or Elixirs

Heat-resistant 'buffs' can be applied by eating food or drinking elixirs with 'cold' ingredients. These are Chillshrooms, Chillfin Trout, Cold Darners, or Hydromelons to name a few. Players can find most of these ingredients in colder regions such as the Hebra and Tabantha Region (snowy areas). On the other hand, Hydromelons are native to the Gerudo Wasteland.

By adding one or more cold ingredient(s), a meal will gain Heat-Resistance. The duration/strength of the buff is determined by the number of cold ingredients in the recipe. If players are just starting out in Tears of the Kingdom, then they should forgo fancy recipes until they have enough Rupees and ingredients.

Here are a few recipes to cook that will generate heat-resistance:

  • Meat and Seafood Fry: Raw Meat/Drumstick, Coldfin Trout (x1-x4)
  • Fish Skewer: Coldfin Trout (x1-x5)
  • Mushroom Rice Balls: Chillshroom (x1-x4), Rock Salt
  • Fruit Pie: Tabantha Wheat, Cane Sugar, Goat Butter, Hydromelon (x1-x2)

Players that prefer elixirs will need to combine a critter and at least one Monster Part. Monster Parts can be gained from defeating any type of monster, but it's recommended to use Bokoblin Fangs or Bokoblin Horns since they drop more frequently.

Here's what players will need to make a heat-resistant/Chilly Elixir:

  • Cold Darner or Winterwing Butterfly
  • Any Monster Part

Weather resistances as well as buffs can't be stacked. Taking two elixirs or meals with effects will cause them to cancel each other out.

Get the Desert Voe Set (Tears of the Kingdom)

Players that make it to the Gerudo Wasteland region of Hyrule should head for Kara Kara Bazaar or Gerudo Town. There's a piece of armor called the Desert Voe Headband that offers one-level of heat-resistance. It's also the cheapest of the Voe Set being at 450 Rupees. Even having just one level of heat-resistance should be enough to ward off the desert heat.

Getting the remaining two pieces of the Voe Set will be trickier. Unlike Breath of the Wild, Link doesn't need the Gerudo Set to sneak past the guards. Instead, he can enter the town by going through the sewers, then use the Ascend Ability to climb into the Gerudo Secret Club from below.

Here, Link can purchase the Desert Voe Spaulder and Desert Voe Trousers. Voe armor is rather pricey with the following pieces at:

  • Desert Voe Spaulder: 1300 Rupees
  • Desert Voe Trousers: 650 Rupees

Thus, if players aren't looking for Set Bonuses or the like, they should just stick with purchasing the Voe Headband from Kara Kara Bazaar. As they continue their Tears of the Kingdom journey, they can pick up the last pieces of the Set once they have enough Rupees.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available on Nintendo Switch.
